Cass County criminal records depend on the state and the type of record you need. This page covers Cass County, Michigan and Cass County, North Dakota as examples. A court case file is different from a sheriff or agency record request.
For Michigan court records, choose the court route that matches the record. Cass County District Court handles misdemeanors and initial felony proceedings. Cass County Circuit Court handles felony trials and some high-court misdemeanors.
Use the official District Court case search or Circuit Court case search. District Court file-room contact: 269-445-4424, [email protected]. Circuit Court file-room contact: 269-445-4416, [email protected].
A written court-record request should identify the requested record and provide enough information for the court to locate it, including at least party names or a case number. A general request for an unspecified criminal background check is not the same as a court-file request.
Michigan court records may be inspected without charge unless a statute, court rule, or court order restricts access. Copies are charged at $1 per page for up to 25 total pages under the published schedule. Paper pickup or advance self-addressed stamped envelope arrangements may apply.
Sheriff records are separate from judicial records. Cass County Michigan provides a separate sheriff records request route, including sheriff FOIA contact [email protected]. The judiciary, including the County Clerk acting as Circuit Court clerk, is handled separately and is not treated as an ordinary county FOIA request.
For Cass County, North Dakota, start with the official Cass County Clerk of District Court route. North Dakota provides a free online informational inquiry using identifiers such as name, case number, or citation number. The online access route provides informational, non-certified record information; restricted information is not included and online information is not the official certified record.
A clerk search is a separate service when additional record location work is needed. Written clerk searches cost $10 per name and kind of record, and copies cost $0.10 per page effective July 1, 2025.
